How to Cancel Crunch Membership (2026)
Last checked September 7, 2026
Crunch cancellations go through your home club. Some clubs let you cancel in the member portal under Manage Membership; the rest want a phone call or a visit. The notice you owe before your next billing date is set by your own membership agreement rather than by a single national rule, so read that first — and watch the annual fee, which is billed on its own schedule.
Steps to cancel Crunch
Crunch clubs are mostly franchises operating under state-specific agreements, which is why the answer to every cancellation question starts with your club and your paperwork.
- Open your membership agreement and find the cancellation clause. Crunch's own FAQ says the required notice before your next billing date varies with the terms of your agreement — that number is the single most important thing on this page and only your contract has it.
- Log into the Member Portal and look under Manage Membership. Some Crunch clubs offer cancellation there. If yours does, this is the fastest route and it leaves a record.
- If there is no portal option, contact your home club directly by phone or in person. Crunch also has an online contact form for member requests, which is useful as a written trail even when the club processes the cancellation itself.
- Do it before the notice window closes, not on the billing date. If your agreement says 30 days and your dues come out on the 1st, a request on the 20th still buys you one more month.
- Check when your annual fee lands. At Crunch Signature clubs it is charged three months after you join and then once a year on that date — not in January, and not with your monthly dues.
- Get the confirmation in writing and watch the next statement. If a charge appears after your cancellation date, the written confirmation is what gets it refunded.
Can you cancel Crunch online?
At some clubs, yes. Crunch says online cancellation is available through the Member Portal under Manage Membership at participating locations, and that cancellation policies vary by location based on state and local guidelines. There is no single national online cancellation.
If your portal has no cancel option, that is your club's setup, not a bug. Call the club, ask exactly what they need — some want a signed form, some accept an email from the address on your account — and ask them to confirm the effective date in writing.
If you joined online and you are in New York or California, state law requires an online cancellation route regardless of what the club prefers. That is worth raising politely if you are being told to come in.
Cancellation fees and notice periods
What is national at Crunch is short; what matters most is local. Here is the honest split.
| What | Crunch rule |
|---|---|
| Where notice goes | Your home club — Member Portal where offered, otherwise phone or in person |
| Notice before your next billing date | Set by your membership agreement, not by a national policy |
| Annual fee | Varies by home club, up to $89 |
| When the annual fee is charged | At Signature clubs, three months after joining, then annually on that date |
| Refunds | Limited to your state's cooling-off window right after signing |
| Cancellation fee | Depends on your club and whether your plan has a term — check the agreement |
Because policies are set club by club, treat any number you read elsewhere — including a friend's experience at a different Crunch — as a guess until you have seen it in your own agreement.
Your legal rights
Two things decide what a gym has to let you do, and only one of them is settled. The federal rule most people have heard of is not in force: the FTC's click-to-cancel rule, which would have required canceling to be as simple as signing up, was thrown out in full by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025, weeks before compliance was due. The FTC reopened the rulemaking with an advance notice of proposed rulemaking in March 2026 and took comments until April 13, 2026; no replacement rule exists yet. The agency still sues over hard-to-cancel subscriptions under ROSCA and Section 5 of the FTC Act, so this is not a free-for-all — but there is no federal cancel button to point at today.
State law is where the real rights are. In New York, General Business Law § 624 lets you cancel any health-club contract within three business days of signing, with no penalty, and requires every dollar back within ten business days. It also gives you an exit later: a doctor-certified disability lasting more than three months, a move of more than 25 miles from any club the chain operates, or the club no longer providing what it sold you. Death releases the estate. Separately, § 527-a says that if you signed up online, you have to be able to cancel online — that is the law the Attorney General used against Equinox in May 2025.
California runs on the same idea with different numbers: Civil Code § 1812.85 requires a five-day cooling-off period on health-studio contracts, refunds are pro-rated to what you actually used, and the disability, death, and 25-mile relocation outs are all there. Since July 1, 2025, AB 2863 has required businesses to offer cancellation through the same channel you signed up in.
Crunch states plainly that cancellation policies vary by location based on state and local guidelines. That is a franchise reality, but it does not let a club undercut a state statute: the cooling-off window and the medical and relocation exits belong to you, not to the club's process.
Most other states have their own health-club statute with a similar cooling-off window and similar medical and relocation exits. Look yours up before you accept a no at the front desk. This is general information, not legal advice.
Cheaper alternatives before you cancel
Before you leave, ask about the two things Crunch's national FAQ hands to the club: a freeze, and a tier change. Crunch sells several membership levels at the same location, and dropping from a multi-club tier to a single-club one often saves more than the hassle of switching gyms.
If it comes down to price, compare properly. We track what every gym in New York City actually charges, including the signup and annual fees that make an advertised rate misleading.
Start with Crunch Fitness against Planet Fitness and PureGym. If you have been going twice a month, day passes will almost certainly cost less than any of them.
Crunch cancellation FAQ
Can I cancel my Crunch membership online?
At some clubs. Crunch says online cancellation is offered through the Member Portal under Manage Membership at participating locations, and that policies vary by location. If your portal has no cancel option, contact your home club by phone or in person, or use Crunch's online contact form to create a written record.
How much notice does Crunch need to cancel?
It depends on your membership agreement. Crunch's FAQ says the required notice before your next billing date varies with the terms of the agreement you signed, and clubs are franchised, so there is no single national number. Read your agreement's cancellation clause before you set a date.
Does canceling Crunch stop the annual fee?
Only if you cancel before the fee is charged. The annual fee varies by home club up to $89, and at Crunch Signature clubs it is billed three months after you join and then annually on that date. Because it is on its own schedule, it can land after your last monthly draft.
What is Crunch's cancellation fee?
There is no national figure. Whether you owe anything depends on your club and whether your plan has a minimum term — a month-to-month membership normally costs nothing to leave once you have given the notice your agreement asks for.
Can I get a refund from Crunch after canceling?
Generally only inside your state's cooling-off window right after you sign, which Crunch's FAQ points to for refunds. After that you are paying out the notice period rather than getting money back, so timing the request matters more than arguing afterwards.
