How to Cancel Planet Fitness Membership (2026)

Last checked September 7, 2026

Planet Fitness cancellations go through your home club, not head office. Some members can do it online in the member portal; everyone else cancels in person or by written notice mailed to the club. Notice has to reach the club by the 10th to stop that month's draft on the 17th, and by the 25th of the previous month to stop the annual fee. Cancel inside a minimum term and there is a $58 buyout.

Steps to cancel Planet Fitness

Almost every Planet Fitness is a franchise, so the club that signed you up is the club that has to process the cancellation. Start there and work down this list.

  1. Check the member portal first. Log in at planetfitness.com and open your account. Planet Fitness says some members can cancel online depending on their membership type and where their home club is — if the option exists for you, it is there, and it is the only channel that gives you a timestamp without leaving the house.
  2. If there is no online option, go to your home club in person. Ask for a cancellation form, fill it in at the desk, and leave with a copy or a written confirmation. A staff member saying they will take care of it is not a record.
  3. Or mail written notice to your home club's address. Planet Fitness accepts a mailed request; send it certified or with tracking, because what counts is the date the club receives it, not the date you posted it.
  4. Time it against the billing dates. To stop the monthly draft on the 17th, the club needs your request by the 10th — billing changes can take up to seven days to take effect.
  5. Time it against the annual fee separately. That one only stops if your request reaches the club by the 25th of the month before your annual-fee date, and your annual-fee date is set by when you joined, not by January.
  6. Keep the confirmation and check your next two statements. Blocking the payment at your bank is not a cancellation — the dues keep accruing and the balance can end up in collections.

Can you cancel Planet Fitness online?

Sometimes, and it depends on your club. Planet Fitness's own customer-service page says members may be eligible to cancel online based on their membership type and the location of their home club, and that the cancellation process varies club to club. There is no national online cancellation for everyone.

The practical test takes a minute: log into your account on planetfitness.com and look for a cancel option under your membership. If it is there, use it. If it is not, your club has not turned it on and you are back to in person or mail.

Two things people expect that Planet Fitness does not list as cancellation channels: the app and a phone call. Its stated routes are the club itself — in person or by mail — plus the online portal where it is available. If you joined online and you live in New York or California, state law is on your side here; see the legal section below.

Cancellation fees and notice periods

The numbers below come from Planet Fitness's published policy. Individual franchises can add local wrinkles, so check your own membership agreement for anything that contradicts them.

WhatPlanet Fitness rule
Where notice goesYour home club — in person, by mail, or the online portal where offered
Notice to stop the monthly draftReceived by the 10th; dues draft on the 17th
Notice to stop the annual feeReceived by the 25th of the month before the annual-fee date
Annual fee$49 at most clubs; some offers quote up to $59
No-commitment membershipCancel any time, no cancellation fee
Minimum-term membership$58 buyout if you end it before the term is up

The buyout is the one that surprises people. A no-commitment membership costs nothing to leave, but promotional rates often carry a 12-month term, and ending one early triggers the $58. If you are close to the end of the term, waiting it out is usually cheaper than paying to leave.

Your legal rights

Two things decide what a gym has to let you do, and only one of them is settled. The federal rule most people have heard of is not in force: the FTC's click-to-cancel rule, which would have required canceling to be as simple as signing up, was thrown out in full by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025, weeks before compliance was due. The FTC reopened the rulemaking with an advance notice of proposed rulemaking in March 2026 and took comments until April 13, 2026; no replacement rule exists yet. The agency still sues over hard-to-cancel subscriptions under ROSCA and Section 5 of the FTC Act, so this is not a free-for-all — but there is no federal cancel button to point at today.

State law is where the real rights are. In New York, General Business Law § 624 lets you cancel any health-club contract within three business days of signing, with no penalty, and requires every dollar back within ten business days. It also gives you an exit later: a doctor-certified disability lasting more than three months, a move of more than 25 miles from any club the chain operates, or the club no longer providing what it sold you. Death releases the estate. Separately, § 527-a says that if you signed up online, you have to be able to cancel online — that is the law the Attorney General used against Equinox in May 2025.

California runs on the same idea with different numbers: Civil Code § 1812.85 requires a five-day cooling-off period on health-studio contracts, refunds are pro-rated to what you actually used, and the disability, death, and 25-mile relocation outs are all there. Since July 1, 2025, AB 2863 has required businesses to offer cancellation through the same channel you signed up in.

Planet Fitness adds its own caveat to all of this: it says some policies and procedures vary by location based on state and local guidelines. That cuts both ways — your club may be more flexible than the national page suggests, and it may also be slower.

Most other states have their own health-club statute with a similar cooling-off window and similar medical and relocation exits. Look yours up before you accept a no at the front desk. This is general information, not legal advice.

Cheaper alternatives before you cancel

If the reason is money rather than the gym itself, there are two smaller moves worth making first. A Black Card membership can usually be downgraded to the Classic rate at the desk, which keeps your club and drops the monthly. And if you are going to be away for a while, ask your club what it offers — freeze policies are set franchise by franchise, so the only reliable answer is your club's.

If you are leaving over price, leave with a number. We track what every gym in New York City actually charges — dues, signup fees, and the all-in monthly that includes them — so you can see whether the next place is actually cheaper than the one you are quitting.

Worth comparing before you sign anything else: Planet Fitness against PureGym and Crunch Fitness, the two chains in the same price bracket. If you only train a few times a month, day passes can beat any membership, and it is worth checking whether you can pay with FSA or HSA money before you decide.

Planet Fitness cancellation FAQ

Can I cancel my Planet Fitness membership online?

Some members can. Planet Fitness says online cancellation depends on your membership type and the location of your home club, and that the process varies club to club. Log into your account on planetfitness.com and look for the cancel option under your membership — if it is not there, your club has not enabled it, and you will need to cancel in person or send written notice by mail.

How do I cancel Planet Fitness without going in?

Mail written notice to your home club, or use the online portal if your club supports it. Send mail certified or tracked: the club has to receive the request by the 10th for it to stop that month's draft on the 17th, and the received date is what counts.

Does canceling stop the Planet Fitness annual fee?

Only if you are early enough. The annual fee has its own deadline — your request has to reach the club by the 25th of the month before the fee is due. Cancel after that and the $49 annual fee still comes out, even though your monthly dues have stopped.

What is Planet Fitness's cancellation fee?

There is none on a no-commitment membership. If your agreement has a minimum term and you end it early, there is a $58 buyout fee. Promotional rates are the ones most likely to carry a term, so check your agreement before you assume you are month-to-month.

How do I cancel a Planet Fitness Black Card membership?

The same way as any other: online where your club offers it, otherwise in person or by mail to your home club, with the same 10th-of-the-month deadline. If your Black Card came with a minimum term, the $58 buyout applies. If the cost is the problem rather than the gym, downgrading to the Classic rate keeps the membership and drops the monthly.

Can I just cancel my card to stop Planet Fitness billing?

No, and it usually makes things worse. The membership stays active, the dues keep adding up, and unpaid balances get handed to a collections agency. Cancel through the club, get it in writing, then check the next two statements.
